Maman Joon’s name roughly translates to “dear mom,” and it’s a fitting moniker for this new restaurant near your Chevy Chase apartment. After all, the eatery’s guiding philosophy is that home-cooked food—the kind that mom would make—brings people together. Using time-tested family recipes from multiple generations of Mediterranean chefs, Maman Joon cultivates an atmosphere in which delicious food and community naturally collide.
Dive into your meal with a few of the authentic appetizers, perhaps the freshly whipped hummus with house-baked bread or the must o mooseer, a yogurt dip made from scratch with Persian shallots. For the main course, devour a kabob or two. Try the classic koobideh kabob with seasoned ground beef and onions, or dig into the barg kabob, which features chunks of filet mignon. Prefer poultry or seafood? The spicy chicken kabob and the saffron-infused salmon kabob are two solid options. Maman Joon also offers a decent selection of meat-free dishes, like the couscous salad and the Mediterranean ratatouille. Don’t forget about dessert! The unique Persian ice cream is infused with saffron and pistachios for a subtly savory treat.
